About Celiac Disease

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder in which ingestion of gluten (a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and oats) triggers an immune response in the small intestine. This immune response damages the villi, the tiny finger-like projections that line the small intestine and are responsible for absorbing nutrients from food. Over time, this damage can lead to a number of health problems, including malnutrition, anemia, osteoporosis, and weight loss.

According to Ayurveda, celiac disease can be related to a condition called Grahani, which is characterized by chronic diarrhea, malabsorption, and malnutrition. Grahani is caused by an imbalance of the doshas, between Pitta (fire) and Vata (air) doshas.
